The children are creepy, again

According to Variety, someone has got it in their head to remake David Cronenberg's THE BROOD. Once I stopped banging my head against a brick wall I noticed this little 'gem' in the article:

The original "Brood," released in 1979, was one of Cronenberg's earliest pics. The Canadian helmer, whose "Eastern Promises" is in theaters, is enjoying something of a renaissance. A remake of Cronenberg's 1981 film "Scanners" is also in development, with Darren Lynn Bousman attached to direct for Dimension Films.

I somehow doubt that Mr. Cronenberg, or any fan of the original two films, is "enjoying" the idea of these sure to be shoddy remakes!


Truth be told, I havn't seen THE BROOD since I was a young pup, but I do recall that it scared the crap out of me. And the trailer may be a touch on the side of hyperbole!

A good remake?

I've ranted before about my general dislike of remakes, but every once in a while someone gets it right. The first case in point that comes to mind is usually Philip Kaufman's 1978 remake of INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS. I havn't seen it's latest iteration THE INVASION, but word of mouth wasn't good to say the least.

Why are The Birds here?

There seems to be a real trend in remakes where they want to 'explain' away anything that was mysterious or ambiguous. The remake of THE BIRDS appears to be no different according to Cathy Schulman, president of Mandalay Pictures.

“We think we have a very contemporary take,” Schulman said. “In the original, the birds just showed up, and it was kind of like, why are the birds here? This time, there’s a reason why they’re here and (people) have had something to do with it. There’s an environmental slant to what could create nature fighting back.”

Maybe the birds will attack Al Gore for tricking me into watching a Powerpoint presentation instead of a film!

I'll reserve judgment on this until I've actually seen the film (novel concept I think) but plenty of people have already been ranting.

Thankfully this remake has stalled... for now!

Tomorrow night I get to sneak into the GRINDHOUSE! Keeping my expectations lowered.
